Mediation in doing the dishes

This post is also available in: Nederlands (Dutch)

Doing the dishes is not really the first thing that comes up when thinking about meditation. I myself have the attitude, ‘it just needs to be done’, and try to start without listening to the phrase “I don’t feel like it” going through my head. Before you know it, it’s done. And yes, I feel a more relaxed when the job is finished. A tidy environment reflects a tidy mind … More and more, I can see daily activities as a form of meditation. “Meditation in motion.” Perhaps a special and at the same time a very simple form of meditation. Or perhaps not that simple…

Many people experience housekeeping as a burden. Something it has to be done as quickly as possible in between busy schedules. Often with resistance and not always without small accidents. Tripping over a cord while vacuuming and taking the vase of the coffee table with you in the proces. Washing dishes while cooking, and by being just too far from the frying pan, suddenly having the smell of burning food penetrating your nose. Turning on the washing machine and seeing that red sock along with the white wash tumbling in front the window, while shouting into your mobile phone clamped between your ear and shoulder. Well … is it all that faster and more efficient when you do all those tasks at ones? And what does this intent actually profite for your wellbeing? I do not think much good …

Of course, I recognize those moments in life. But today is different. Today I decide to do everything with attention and not all at the same time. This is tough, because somewhere I am also an efficiency ‘junky’. Some things I consciously have to let go again, as taking an empty glass with me towards the kitchen, on my way to the toilet. Other things are more easy. I soon experience that focusing on one thing at a time brings me a lot of rest and balance. And isn’t it nice to give all your love and attention in preparing a nice meal for friends ? Even doing the dirty dishes afterwards gets to be more enjoyable …
